In 1975 Nikon introduced the first
Small World competition.
This competition is aimed at bringing attention to world photography through the
microscope. This competition observes the beauty and intricacy of a world that is
seen through a microscope lens. Well, if your interest is peaked, the 2005 Nikon Small World Competition is now open for entries. So, for those of you who dare use their eyes to see
the beauty in a world many of us take for granted, the deadline for the contest is April 28th 2006. I look forward to seeing the winners.
A few days ago I came across this article I thought was so promising. The
topic was on blindsights.
“Blindsight allows
people to use visual information they get through their eyes even though they
have no consciousness of the visual experience, said Christopher Mole, a
postdoctoral fellow in philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.”
It is said that blindsights cannot be determined in a lab,
but just the fact they are able recognize it merits congratulation in modern
technology. Check out the article, maybe you’ll also be impressed.
Last night my friend Tina and I went for a walk along Lake Michigan starting from Montrose to catch a cool breeze and much needed exercise (there are a few pictures I had taken on my Moblog). It was nice seeing the moons reflection sparkling off the water, people standing on the rocks with their fishing rods, lovers cuddling so close together, and the weather, though cloudy, was crisp yet had a hint of mist in the air. I really began to appreciate it even more the fact that I live so close to the lake.
Then, as it always does, reality set in. As the evening got darker and the walk path became a little bit more of a mystery, something ran across the path from the rocks to the gated golf course near Irving Park. Now I am a city girl and I have no problem in admitting to that. What we had seen was a raccoon. Now I know many of you are probably laughing or either brushing it off saying that’s nothing. But as a city girl the only rodent like creature I have seen was a city rat (and one of those made an appearance as well later as we walked). My heart jumped out of my chest with fear. But with Tina’s encouragement I made it to the end of the walk path that lead to the open park which led to the runners/bikers path which was more lit. This morning Tina told me she was proud of me facing my fears, but did I? I would avoid any situation like that if ever it should arise and still I have no affection or liking for the Procyon lotor, better known as the raccoon.
Anyway I went off on a tangent for a moment from technology and the arts to get that experience off my chest. It was difficult trying to tie my experience with technology and art but I came up with this story. It is about a mother who is deciding to take on the record companies instead of giving in to the fear tactics that are being used to have her settle out of court. If you remember, the record companies filed about 13,000 similar federal lawsuits against Internet users across the country starting back in September of 2003 over illegal Internet downloading. They attacked unsuspecting parents and grandparents who had no idea of what was going on. It’s good reading and a good way to keep up to date of what’s going on with the whole file sharing debacle.
I also want you guys to check out this website. It’s a look into the concept of 3D photography known as 3D Photorealism. At the website Tech Manifesto (just click on the photos for a much closer view) there are some cool photos that will make you say…“How can I get my pictures to look like that?”.
Check it ouuuut.
This photo was posted by musicmuse_ca on flickr. These toriis, hundreds of them, are behind the main shrine complex at the Suwa Jinja shrine in Nagasaki, Japan. The flowers are over a path that leads to one of many water shrines deep in the woods on the side of a mountain.
Yesterday I set up my Moblog with Textamerica. It was actually pretty simple and I was having fun doing it too. I’m always taking pictures of my friends and the crazy things that happen around me. Well now I have somewhere to show them off. Check them out, believe me it’s really cool. I’m trying to get my friends and family to sign up.
Now you know a great way to keep in touch with everyone…without even having to call.
Update: Textamerica is no longer a free service nor a monthly payment service. They are offering paid accounts for an annual fee of $99.
