Open and Close

Today I have two events I want to post for you. First I stumbled upon a website that has a very interesting approach to making documentaries. Open Source Cinema works on a collaborative platform. It is a documentary project that creates feature films about copyright in the digital age. The creator, Brett Gaylor, is asking you the filmmaker or videographer to help him create this documentary. It is the whole concept behind “Open source cinema”. To read more about the film click on wikifilm on the OpenSourceCinema.org page and to read the philosophy behind the project click on manifesto. If you decide to do so sign up and register, maybe watch a few of the videos, and then create a page. There you have it. You may find yourself apart of something big.

Most people who have an idea for a film become bogged down with the stress of where can I get funding and support. Well as a member of IFP Chicago (Independent Feature Project) I must tell you about IFP Market 2007. I think IFP can explain itself better than I can so here’s what they have on the website:

IFP Market Logo

What is the IFP Market?
The IFP Market is a week-long showcase, held each autumn in New York, for new features, works-in-progress, shorts, and scripts. For independent filmmakers, it is the only market in the U.S. where one can present new film and television work-in-development directly to the film industry in a selective and professional atmosphere. For the film industry, it is a vital exhibition and discovery forum for new talent and a place to discover new films before they hit the festival circuit.

There are three categories no borders, spotlight on documentaries, and emerging narrative. Plus there is the Jury Awards which will awards $25,000 in prizes.

$10,000 Emerging Latino Filmmaker Award
$10,000 Socially Conscious Documentary
$5,000 Outstanding Screenplay

The deadlines are in May so get on it. While you’re there become a member of the IFP in your area so you’ll always have updates.
